Who Defines Beauty?

Eating disorders are a very important and controversial subject that needs to be discussed because I believe that one step in the recovery of our nation (in reference to eating disorders) is to be aware of them and the causes of these disorders. Although I know males are subject to eating disorders, a larger number of females are victims of these diseases, so I will be talking more specifically about the women population; approximately seven million women compared to one million men (DMH). These women that have contracted an eating disorder, I believe were influenced by the media. By media, I mean T.V. shows, advertisements, fashion industry, and models (in magazines, fashion, and TV).
Most people have been a witness to the portrayal of women in the media. It is estimated that on average, we are "expected to see between four and six hundred advertisements per day" (The media) and more than one in ten of those ads are based on a beauty product that will feature a model. This exposure to all sorts of medias start at a very young age which, I believe, is directly linked to the age in which eating disorders are contracted becoming younger. "In the 1970s, the youngest ages were 15-17 years whereas now, the youngest ages are 10-12"(Condon). This is a sad fact that children as young as ten are contracting anorexia or bulimia, etc.
This exposure to the media is promoting (unintentionally) eating disorders. I think that ads, T.V. shows, movies, models, and the fashion industry are not trying to do this (promote disorders), I think they are portraying an idealistic view of beauty. This entails many things such as we (as women) cannot go out without make-up, our hair can NEVER be a mess, and most of all, we MUST be thin. Before I continue, I would like to recognize those who have noticed this issue and now uses women of all shapes, sizes, etc in their ads (Dove as an example--> different Dove commercials: Onslaught, Evolution, Through Her Eyes, Real Beauty, and Girl Beauty). Regardless of the few who have recognized this issue, the majority still hasn't and thus causes me to believe it needs to be discussed a bit more.
My main focus for this blog/paper is the thin aspect of the idealistic beauty because this view of thinness is what can cause eating disorders. Why does this view cause these disorders? Look at the media. Let's start by looking at models in the fashion industry. The normal female model has a body weight that is less than their ideal body weight by 20-25%. This is on the verge of being considered anorexic. Why does the fashion industry cause the eating disorders? Because the industry requires models to be so thin that they look emaciated and this is what young girls feel is how they should look to be beautiful. What is truly sad is that not only do the models look anorexic, some of these models do contract anorexia or another eating disorder. In fact, many have died because of this (there are several examples of models who have died due to the eating disorders under the hyperlinked word "died"). I personally know a girl who used to do print work and thus was in the modeling business. She explained to me that they (the people who she worked for) put her on a strict diet and because of this she became ill. She was only 16 years old.
Why do we fall for this ideal body based solely on the modeling/fashion industry? These women are considered to be beautiful and sexy. They are successful in their career as a model. I want to be sexy, beautiful and successful. It's a basic desire of every female. We, as human beings, fall under this assumption that to be all those things, we must be thin. Most (not all because there are plus size models) models are (not to be condescending) disgusting. Look at this picture on this blog. She is purely skin and bones in the most literal of meanings. She is not thin she is nothing. I am not simply blaming the models for this, honestly, I feel bad for them. I blame the industry behind the models, the people who tell them they have to be so thin they resemble a young boy.
What can we do to prevent this anorexia based upon fashion models and other models of an extremely thin, almost emaciated, look? We can understand and know that it does not take us as women to be bulimic or anorexic to be beautiful.
Other types of medias effect our perceptions of beauty too. Television is another way that these medias are spread. For an example of how easily people pick up trends from T.V. is when females went on a Jennifer Aniston "hair craze". Television became a place to subconsciously look and find trends. Most actresses that play a main role, are very rarely over-weight and most are not even the normal weight. Even in animated sitcoms, the women are portrayed as very thin. In the Simpsons, Marge Simpson is extremely thin while Homer is quite large in comparison. This makes society believe that it's not ok for women to be larger, but it is for men, we can still love them. An example of women not being loved is also in Two and a Half Men. All the women who are "loved" are thin, sexy, beautiful, young women. The one woman who is not "loved" is the maid. She is larger than the rest of the woman, has a lower status than the rest because she is a maid, and she seems to be rude and inconsiderate. This relates being larger/over-weight to being rude, unsuccessful, and unloved. What else is there to do besides be thin? We all want to be loved, kind, and successful and not to mention beautiful. The only way to do all this is to be thin. This is one of several causes of eating disorders. This lie that women are fed all over the world that to be loved, beautiful, successful, kind, and wanted, they MUST be thin. When you can't just simply be in the correct B.M.I. range and must be below it, there is nothing else to do but not eat or vomit your food.
Eating disorders are a large problem and are killing people very frequently. 5-10% of anorexics will die within 10 years, 18-20% will die after 20 years of contracting the disease. Another sad fact is that only 30-40% will recover. Death rates are 12 times higher in relation to anorexia nervosa than any other cause of death for 15-24 year olds (DMH). Despite these statistics, there are actually websites that support anorexia (and other eating disorders). These sites (for anorexia) are called "pro-ana" sites. To me it is wrong to promote something that can harm somebody. People need to realize that eating disorders are not choices; they are a mental illness. It may merely start out as a choice (losing weight to model, etc) and then the illness forms from this. If the rest of media (I say the rest because some companies like Dove already have done this) can take notice of this horrible illness and the effect they are having, they can help change it. What I mean is that if the media realizes this and then supports healthy women with a healthy weight and size, the public will be more influenced by the media in a good way. Instead of losing weight to become a stick and sickly, the only weight to be lost is to be in a healthy weight range. This is the ideal woman...healthy.
The real question and dilemma is, what can we do to prevent this anorexia based upon fashion models and other models of an extremely thin, and other medias? We can understand and know that it does not take us as women to be bulimic or anorexic to be beautiful. If other companies went in the direction that dove has, the media would no longer be scorned or blamed for promoting eating disorders. Modeling agencies could do the same thing to help out, too. If all these companies would require women to have a minimum BMI as opposed to a maximum BMI, this influence they are causing would be significantly smaller.

These are simply some links to videos about anorexia and other eating disorders.

OH THE ELECTION...

Because of the election coming up, I felt that in order for me to make a smart and informed decision for who to vote for, I should look at both McCain’s and Obama’s stances.
Abortion:
Mccain’s belief is against abortion rights meaning he is pro-life.
Obama’s stance is for abortion rights meaning pro-choice.
Budget/Economy:
McCain: He will balance the federal budget by the end of his first term by curbing wasteful spending and overhauling entitlement programs.
Obama: Require all disclosure of all congressional pet projects and force law makers pay for any new spending or tax breaks.
Civil Rights(liberties): (direct quote from newsday.com)
McCAin: “McCain is for renewal of the Patriot Act when it comes up next year, is for implementing the Real ID card next year, and supports the Military Commissions Act's ban of habeas corpus rights to people held as enemy combatants.”
Obama: “Obama promises to seek revisions in use of National Security Letters, sneak-and-peak searches and material witness arrests in the Patriot Act when it comes up for renewal. He also has concerns about Real ID and favors restoring habeas corpus rights to detainees held by the United States as enemy combatants.”
Defense (spending→ things McCain and Obama have said on the issue):
McCain: Make all defense contracts fixed-cost; costs are out of control. Eliminate defense pork, but increase most other defense. Terminate C-130, B-2, and Seawolf; use funds to modernize. $6.4B of military spending waste is a disgrace and raise military pay to avoid military draft.
Obama: Rebuild military for 21st century tasks, restore the readiness of the National Guard and Reserves, and engage our allies in meeting our common security challenges.
Education: (Direct Quotes from www.boston.com/news)
McCain: “Favors parental choice of schools, including vouchers for private schools when approved by local officials, and right of parents to choose home schooling. More money for community college education.”
Obama: “Encourage but not require universal pre-kindergarten programs, expand teacher mentoring programs and reward teachers with higher pay not tied to standardized test scores, in $18 billion plan to be paid for in part by delaying elements of moon and Mars missions. Change No Child Left Behind law "so that we're not just teaching to a test and crowding out programs like art and music." Tax credit to pay up to $4,000 of college expenses for students who perform 100 hours of community service a year.”
Energy/Oil:
McCain: Supports alternative energy and wants to look at more nuclear possibilities. Also supported off shore drilling in order to address the rising of oil prices (contradiction to earlier beliefs).
Obama: Supports using more renewable resources and requiring new vehicles to run on biofuel. Wants to look into clean coal to free US and wants to cut emission standards by 80% by 2050. He would invest $150 billion over 10 years in the production and development of biofuel and renewable energies.
Environment:
McCain: Believes in global warming and that cutting emissions throughout the market will force cleaner technology.
Obama: Also believes in global warming and wants to cap emissions and give incentives to corporations that cut greenhouse gasses.
Gay Marriage:
McCain: He is for gay marriage. He believes that same-sex couples should be allowed to enter into legal agreements for different benefits. Opposes constitutional amendment to ban it.
Obama: Supports civil union and thinks that states should decide it. Opposes constitutional amendment to ban it.
Gun Control: (direct quotes from www.boston.com/news)
McCain: “Voted against ban on assault-type weapons but in favor of requiring background checks at gun shows. Voted to shield gun-makers and dealers from civil suits. ‘I believe the Second Amendment ought to be preserved -- which means no gun control.’”
Obama: “Voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to suit. Also, as Illinois state lawmaker, supported ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.”
Health Care: (direct quotes from www.boston.com/news → summarizing would be almost direct quotes)
McCain: “$2,500 refundable tax credit for individuals, $5,000 for families, to make health insurance more affordable. No mandate for universal coverage. In gaining the tax credit, workers could not deduct the portion of their workplace health insurance paid by their employers.”
Obama: “Mandatory coverage for children, no mandate for adults. Aim for universal coverage by requiring employers to share costs of insuring workers and by offering coverage similar to that in plan for federal employees. Says package would cost up to $65 billion a year after unspecified savings from making system more efficient. Raise taxes on wealthier families to pay the cost.”
Homeland Security: (direct quotes from www.newsday.com)
McCain: “McCain has indicated terrorism probably would continue to be the major focus of the Homeland Security Department, though he would also pay attention to natural disasters. He promises to be on the "offense" against terrorism, but vows never to repeat mistakes of the response to Hurricane Katrina.”
Obama: “arack Obama would bring more of an "all hazards" approach than the one taken now, meaning the Homeland Security Department would focus on all hazards - terrorism and natural disasters - more equally. Obama would continue to focus on terrorism, but would also emphasize weather and other disasters.”
Immigration:
McCain: Used to say that he would allow illegal immigrants stay in the country and become a legal citizen (2006). Now he says he supports the border fence and would secure the border first.
Obama: Also voted in 2006 for illegal immigrants to become legal based on certain qualifications. Also voted for border fence.
Social Security: (direct quotes from www.boston.com/news)
McCain: “Would consider "almost anything" as part of a compromise to save Social Security, yet rules out higher payroll taxes for now.”
Obama: “Proposes raising cap with an unspecified "small adjustment" that would subject a portion of higher incomes to Social Security taxes.”
Taxes:
McCain: Wants to make Bush tax cuts (2001 and 2003) permanent and also a few of his own. Wants to double the deduction of dependents to 7,000$ and would forbid cell phone and internet tax. He also supports a simplified income tax system with 2 rates.
Obama: Will allow Bush tax cuts to expire. Supports a universal mortgage tax credit of 10% and he would raise taxes on capital gain and dividends. Opposed the federal gas tax suspension for the summer of 2008. Wants to close corporate loopholes.
War: (Iraq)
McCain: Opposes scheduled withdraw and supports initial invasion.
Obama: Wants troops out by the end of 2009 and spoke against war and opposes troop increase.
Welfare (things McCain and Obama has said on issue):
McCain: Require 40-hour work weeks from recipients. Supports block grants, welfare-to-work, state control. More housing assistance; tax breaks against homelessness and Fully fund AmeriCorps.
Obama: Cut poverty in half in 10 years, with faith-based help and Create 20 Promise Neighborhoods in high-poverty cities. Stop Fraud Act: full disclosure in subprime lending and $100M increase in IL Earned Income Tax Credit. Develop a strategy to eliminate extreme global poverty.

I will argue that, media’s portrayal of women and teen girls can lead to eating disorders and (mental frustrations→ the contradictory personally portrayal). Before, in the early 1970s, eating disorders were only affecting people as young as 15, now it is affecting people as young as 10. With media portraying women with “perfect” (perfect is in quotes because in reality their bodies are unhealthy) bodies, making young girls (and boys) believe that they must have these perfect bodies causes these eating disorders. An estimated seven million females currently have an eating disorder.
I believe that in order to prevent such traumatic events (any sort of eating disorder), the subject of the portrayal of women in media needs to be brought to people’s attention. This is so that woman can be aware of this information and thus be aware of the lies that the media feeds us.
This paper will address women, specifically between the ages of 13/15-20 (the prime ages of eating disorders) and hopefully will display information to all women and media watchers about the deceitfulness that is given to us. This essay will just be in the form of an academic paper, like any other basic paper but will be placed on my blog. Because most of the people who will be reading this will be reading it off of my blog, I intend to use several other blog sources. Also I will use more credible sources like The New York Times, and other periodicals. I believe that using sources on the internet and providing hyperlinks to the blogs and other sites that I use will help to deliver my message and also include more information that I did not include in my essay.
I have a few things that I would like to include in my paper. One thing I want to include are statistics. I would like to use many different stats like percentage of males and females, mortality rates, etc. I think it will really add solid information to my piece in order to make my argument stronger. Also I want to give examples of medias like TV shows, supermodels, ads, commercials, etc. I want to briefly analyze one or two of them in relation to eating disorders and the frustrations the media puts on women (due to the contradictory personalities a woman “must” have).

Public Discourse

Oh the next writing assignment. Public discourse. Normally I have no problem with writing a paper for any class (I'm not saying that they are well written only that I understand them [I think] and that I can actually brain storm and begin them). With this paper, I was having problems understanding it and brainstorming for it. Finally after some logical thought I believe I have it figured out. Public discourse; break down the phrase. Public, my two favorite definitions pertaining to the phrase, means open to all persons or generally known. Discourse, again my favorite and relevant definitions, means communication of thought by words and a formal discussion of a subject in speech or writing. Adding these definitions together leads me to believe that public discourse are thoughts/opinions/speaking of a subject that the public knows and/or the public is available to know (I'm assuming that the public is allowed to have an opinion, of course, because it is one of our rights).
Now that I understand what is meant by public discourse, I need to think out some ideas, some controversial subjects that pertain to todays issues. Also, in order for my paper to be a good one and thus cared about, my subject must be something that I care about and something that is easy to form (or one that I already have) an opinion on and that I can find information for.

Some of the first things that I can think of are prayer in public schools, political corruption, homosexuality, health care, hate crimes, child abuse, censorship, animal rights (including experimentation) and adoption. This actually may seem like a long list but on all of these issues, I already have my opinion and many sources in which I can utilize.

Animal rights is a huge possibility because it will be easy for me to write about and argue because in my Ethics class, we have been working on animal rights for the past two weeks. I have had to argue for them already.

Censorship, I'm not leaning towards that too much even though it is relatively easy to get sources against it.

Child abuse is a very touchy subject, in my opinion, and it will be hard to find anything for child abuse to be able to state anything that would argue against me (basically I am against it but would need to know the other sides arguments).

Hate crimes are a big issue because just back in my hometown, a hate crime was committed only about a week ago. This makes it an important subject to me because I am completely against hate crimes and for me to be considering to go to the school where students committed this hate crime bothers me. Good news is that there was a march for unity because of it.

I don't know for sure what I am doing yet. This is just me thinking through a few of them.
